A
short drive down the Garden State Parkway, (exit 58
to be exact) is a newly developed Baymens Heritage
Museum called Tuckerton Seaport.
The
place is still being put together but many of the
buildings and exhibits are already on display and
more are to come by fall. The lighthouse is a replica
of one that was actually on the bay in that area,
and inside the museum they show the first ones last
moments before crashing into the sea.
The
area is also accessible by boat and the river was
being dredged when we were there to accommodate the
larger vessels. The volunteers who man the buildings
are more than happy to explain to you all about the
industry in the area in the early part of century.
The
town of Tuckerton is also close by, that has quite
a few interesting small shops, and a classic straight
out of the '50s Stewarts root beer stand is next to
the lighthouse.
Here is Nancy standing next to the clam house by the
river, the top of the lighthouse affords a great
view of the river and surrounding
Pine Barrens.
A great day trip for those who love the mystique of
our shore area lifestyle and who like to climb in
lighthouses. Also if you are feeling adventurous Barnegat
Lighthouse is right up Rte. 9 and worth taking
a look at. (Before it also falls into the bay as it
has begun to lean, 21" in the last year!)
We
will be back in the fall to check out the new additions!
