So nowadays I see people all over wearing slip on checkerboard @vans . But it wasn’t always that way. Back in the 80’s Vans wearers were few and far between and to wear them to school or business was just not done. Well yours truly was a trend setter 36 years ago. 1989. Lost In States. People hated the name, disliked the tour shirt and ya know what, we did a tour anyway. Jeff Mayer quit because I told him we didn’t have the money to bring Jon Byers. Brad McCarty replaced him. We lost 4 shows in Chicago and broke down in Indiana. Through it all we persevered. That year the BMX industry died. I would quit and run the Ramp-Ateria. Yea, I loved coming up with names for shit, and would continue riding for another 4 years hardcore till my knees and insurability said no more. 1985 AFA Masters Finals in NH. Since Ron Stebenne ran the mist dialed comps in the country at that time. The AFA decided to have the finals for the then primarily west coast dominated sport on the east coast. Bob Osborn hated the contest area as it was super hard to light for photography. But the raddest riding at that time took place late in 1985 there. To the right the original HVTT ramp painted in @harobmx colors. Oh and that’s me doing the 1 hand 1 foot straight drop in. Figured I’d change it up this time and post a photo I took. This is at the opening the Joe Tiseo ramp park in North NJ. The rider, who I originally mistook for @gsbrodney is actually @budz_is_broken I didn’t know him then but eventually I would learn he is a staple on the NJ freestyle scene. As a now “old guy” who still occasionally plays on the BMX, one of the dudes I keep track of who currently rides is @burnsbonedeth I’m sure it has nothing to do with leather jackets, tight pants and an affinity for motorhead…. LOL. 31 years ago, the general bikes team in its last incarnation. Flatland legends Sean Leslie and Jay Jones flank me on my left and right. And I will go down with my AC DC cap damn you all!!! This was a few months before we would get stuck in Indiana and meet future legend @kipbmx of @spacebrotherspodcast BMX is the most niche of lifestyles.
